Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)

This examination falls within Level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • Understand practically everything they read and hear without undue effort.
  • Summarise information from a variety of verbal and written sources and be capable of reproducing the basics and logical thrust of that information in a coherent fashion.
  • Express themselves fluently, spontaneously and precisely, and understand clearly how to shade opinions during discussions on complex subjects.

The CPE is recognised by many universities and colleges in the UK and other English-speaking countries as fulfilling English language requirements for entry to higher education.

The CPE examination includes five components:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • English in use
  • Speaking
